Architects Volume 3

This booklet is the third in a series celebrating the work of Scotland’s architects. Volume three covers Basil Spence. Each volume will focus on influences and key buildings.

Internationally renowned as one of Britain’s most important architectural practices of the 20th century, the work of Sir Basil Spence and his partners has been revisited in recent years in the wake of the vast Spence archives entering the public domain.

In 2009-11, Historic Environment Scotland carried out a Basil Spence project to identify and review unlisted buildings in Scotland by this important mid and later 20th century architect and his associates. Sir Basil Spence (1907-1976) was one of Britain’s most celebrated architects of the post war era. Working in Scotland and expanding later into England, Spence and his partners were keen to push beyond accepted design ideas for civic and domestic buildings.

More than 40 buildings designed by Spence and partners in Scotland were visited. 10 buildings were listed as a result of the project.

You can search our Heritage Portal for information about the listed buildings in this project.
