Traditional Materials Framework

The Traditional Materials Framework draws together our research and activity to help produce impactful outcomes for the sustainable supply and best practice use of traditional building materials in Scotland.

The Traditional Materials Framework (TMF) sets out a clear delivery framework to guide work on sustainable supply and best practice use of traditional building materials in Scotland.

It sits alongside Scotland’s Traditional Building Materials (2017). That publication described the key issues affecting the supply of traditional materials and their use. Since then, we have weathered a global pandemic, serious disruption to supply chains, and growing impacts from climate change. These events have shown that access to essential materials can be fragile. The TMF updates our understanding of the main challenges and opportunities facing traditional materials today.
