Scotland's Thatched Buildings
This report is to inform the designations review of over 300 buildings in Scotland which are thatched or are recorded as having had been thatched. 236 of these buildings are currently listed (2018).
Scotland has a long tradition of using thatch, and it has one of the most diverse ranges of thatching materials and techniques found in Europe. However, the number of traditional thatched buildings is decreasing. Those that survive are important in helping us to understand this traditional skill and local building traditions and of course they make up a hugely important part of our built heritage.
The Designations Team is undertaking a listing review of buildings across Scotland which are thatched or are recorded as once having been thatched at the time of listing.
