Climate Change Case Studies

These case studies look at projects tackling waste and litter, as well as ways at achieving responsible tourism in retail.

Inchcolm Island Marine Litter Study: Between May and September 2019, staff undertook periodic surveys and clearances of marine litter on South Beach, Inchcolm Island. This case study presents and categorises the types of waste found. It includes observations about specific types of commonly found items, and how they impact on the natural environment.

Removing Disposable Cups from our Cafe: This case study explores our journey towards removing disposable cups from our cafe. It includes key findings overall and describes the five separate campaigns. As shown, the impact on the number of disposable cups used was very dependent on the campaigns. It also considers the customer's key motivators for choosing reusable cups.

Responsible Retail at Caerlaverock Castle: This case study looks at how the move to a ‘Made in Scotland’ retail offer at Caerlaverock Castle not only delivers our commitment to responsible tourism, but also highlights the benefits of sourcing products locally. Key findings show the positive reception of the ‘Made in Scotland’ offer by visitors and business owners, and the encouraging economic and environmental impacts.

Three cover pages for different case studies, one shows people in a cafe, one shows litter laid out on the floor and the other shows shelving in a shop
