Dr David Caldwell studied archaeology at Edinburgh University and spent 38 years working as a curator for National Museums Scotland. He has published extensively on Scottish archaeology and history. He is president of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, vice-president of the Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology and vice chairman of Fife Cultural Trust.
