In 1640 covenanters captured Caerlaverock, the castle of Robert Maxwell, 1st earl of Nithsdale. Two inventories were taken of its contents after Nithsdale’s forced departure.
This paper explores the contents of the inventories and the cultural contexts in which the castle was furnished.
